Paul Stone Started his racing career in 1995 when a friend "Crazy Jack Makada" offered him a
chance to drive his 4 cylinder little truck, a class at Merced Speedway. Well, that was that! 1996
would see the first full season of racing for the Paul Stone racing team. We had never been in
any kind of a competition racing event before. We took to it like a duck to water. In a class of over
a dozen it didn't take Paul too long to win his first race ever. As 1996 came to an end we found
ourselves 3rd in points, not too bad for our first year ever racing.

1997 would see an event that hindsight would appear to be fun and exciting. Along with Paul,
we found brother Steve, nephew Steve Jr., cousins Ramie and Troy Stone, and cousin Jackie
Stanford all racing in the same class. As an article in the Merced Sun-Star would say : "The
Rolling Stones" . This brought forth some unforgettable main events. 1997 would be a lot like
1996 with heats, dashes, and main event wins. It seemed like our first championship was sure to
be. As 1997 wound down the bad luck monkey would show its face. With late season D.N.F.s we
found ourselves finishing in a disappointing 3rd once more.

1997 would show something else. Competing with all of the family seemed to be fun. However, it
also led to some turmoil. When the team decided to leave the little truck division the name " The
Black Sheep " was born. The end of 1997 left us with no sure division. It was looking like a street
stock was where we were going. Then brother Steve, and cousin Ramie let it be known that they
too were going to move up to a street stock. There it was, same as last year and that WASN'T
going to happen!!!!! So now we were really lost. When friends Darren Thomas and Derick Nance
put the bug of an I. M. C. A. Modified in our heads. We were all for that but where were the funds
going to come from? About a week later Paul was at a luncheon with his wife Jill's grandfather,
Gerald Reiman. Before he knew what was happening Gerald told Paul he would sponsor a car.
So there it was, the funding, the will, now we needed a car. To make a long story short, after
weeks of looking we took a trip to Spokan, Washington. When we got to Spokan, there it was.
Black and green, BLACK, " The Black Sheep" . What didn't fit???
